It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the Institute of Transnational History of China (ITHC). As the Founding Director, I am deeply honored to share with you the vision and aspirations that guide our work.

Hong Kong by history and location is a transnational place. It has been deeply interconnected with other cultures, civilizations, East, and West. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been committed to become a world class research center in the field of transnational history of China. With its open and inclusive environment for exchanges of ideas and research collaborations on related topics, HKU represents the ideal place to develop and sustain this initiative. This is an opportune moment to give the Transnational History of China an institutional home at HKU.

VISION STATEMENT

The Institute of the Transnational History of China connects scholars working in a wide range of transcultural, international and global aspects of historical research. Much excitement and opportunity infuse debates over the practical, intellectual and thematic issues raised by this approach, which connects experts working across a wide range of temporal and spatial timeframes. Hong Kong by history and location is a transnational place. It has been deeply interconnected with other cultures, civilizations, and East and West.

The University of Hong Kong has been committed to study transnational history of China. HKU, with its open and inclusive environment for exchanges of ideas and research collaborations on related topics represents the ideal place to sustain and develop this initiative. This is an opportune moment to give the Transnational History of China an institutional home at HKU. The role of the Institute will be to explore and explain the historical changes and transformations produced by the transfer of people, ideas, cultures and technologies across borders.

In an increasingly globalized world, the study of transnational history is more vital than ever. It allows us to transcend national boundaries and explore the flows of ideas, people, goods, and institutions that have shaped societies.
